CT Colonography (“Virtual Colonoscopy”) for Colon Cancer Screening
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Background: Computed tomographic (CT) colonography, also known as "virtual colonoscopy," is an imaging technique of the colon involving helical computed tomography and computer software to generate high-resolution 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional images of the inner surface of the colon. These images are then interpreted by a radiologist to determine the presence of several types of abnormalities of the colon. CT colonography has been investigated as a technique for colon cancer screening. Although it requires a full bowel cleansing similar to that required for conventional colonoscopy, the procedure requires no sedation or analgesia, and is faster to perform than conventional colonoscopy.

The use of computed tomography colonography or virtual colonography (VC) is gaining acceptance as a screening modality for colon cancer. A comprehensive understanding of VC complications is limited. We report a case of colon perforation in a patient where a colon cancer was diagnosed using VC colonography with manual insufflation. A 79-year-old patient underwent a VC after a failed screening op...
متن کاملVariational Approach Based Image Pre- Processing Techniques for Virtual Colonoscopy
Colorectal cancer includes cancer of the colon, rectum, anus and appendix. Since it is largely preventable, it is extremely important to detect and treat the colorectal cancer in the earliest stage. Virtual colonoscopy is an emerging screening technique for colon cancer. One component of virtual colonoscopy, image pre-processing, is important for colonic polyp detection/diagnosis, feature extra...
متن کاملCT colonography (‘virtual colonoscopy’): Is it ready for colorectal cancer screening?
Colorectal cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death worldwide [1] but is largely preventable. Most colorectal cancers arise from benign adenomatous polyps, which grow slowly. Thus colorectal cancer is highly suited to screening because of its long preclinical phase during which it is detectable and curable [2]. Multiple organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO), the ...
متن کاملComputer-aided detection for virtual colonoscopy
Colon cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in the developed countries. Most colon cancers can be prevented if precursor colon polyps are detected and removed. Virtual colonoscopy, or CT colonography, has shown promise to be the future screening tool for polyp detection, with a number of studies performed at academic institutions showing high sensitivity and specificity. Two main...
متن کاملColon Centreline Calculation for CT Colonography using Optimised 3D Topological Thinning
CT colonography is an emerging technique for colorectal cancer screening. Using this technique virtual reality models of the human colon are generated from an abdominal CT study of a suitably prepared patient. Manual navigation through these models is a slow and tedious process. It is possible to automate navigation by calculating the centreline of the human colon. There are numerous well docum...
